Groundwater assessment units are over-exploited; about a quarter of all units are not 'Safe'.
CGWB, Dynamic Ground Water Resources Assessment 2025FOCUS AREA 04
Putting rainwater back into the aquifer, so that a school has water in the dry season and a community has water security beyond it.
THE NEED — CURRENT DATA
National stage of groundwater extraction against annual extractable resource.
CGWB, Dynamic Ground Water Resources Assessment 2025Projected per-capita water availability by 2031, well below the 1,700 m³ stress threshold.
Central Water Commission assessment, 2019Why it matters
NITI Aayog's Composite Water Management Index (2018) estimated that around 600 million Indians live with high-to-extreme water stress, and the position has not improved. In a school the cost is immediate: no reliable water means no working sanitation, and the children who leave first are girls. Tank storage does not solve it — tanks are small, and once empty the school buys tanker water.
How we help it happen
- Borewell recharge fed by rooftop rainwater harvesting
- Multi-stage gravel filtration — 40 mm, 20 mm and 6 mm
- Lake recharge, rejuvenation and watershed conservation
- Integration with the borewell and tank already on site
- Staff training for upkeep, plus annual inspection by ACS
- Community awareness on water conservation
OUR EXPERIENCE
- First installation
- Complete at Byranayakanahalli, Nelamangala, supported by a US-based corporate partner
- Pilot phase
- 10 schools within six months, standardised modular design
- Targeted outcomes
- 1–2 m local groundwater rise post-monsoon; 20–30% fall in girl-student absenteeism
- Durability
- 90%+ of installed systems fully functional at 6–12 months
- Recognition
- Nominated, FKCCI Global CSR & Sustainability Awards 2026 — Excellence in WASH
